The Design Process

Initial Phone Call

From the very first contact you have with Alex Head Landscapes, we listen carefully to understand your landscape needs.  Whether your plans include a full-scale project involving hardscape and planting design, or a smaller garden rehab -- as well as everything in between -- we at AHL strive to make the dreams you have for your outdoor environments a reality.

Introductory Consultation

At this first meeting, we begin by getting to know you and your garden.  We’ll discuss what you envision for your landscape while using our experience and expertise to offer a fresh perspective.  By examining the space and assessing your priorities, we start to outline the possibilities that exist within your landscape.
If you have been inspired while visiting gardens or reading about landscapes featured in books and magazines, the introductory consultation is a great time to discuss what attracted you to these spaces.

Design Proposal

Based on our initial meeting, we now have a better impression of the scope of your project, helping us to determine the extent of design necessary.
We recommend a
master plan for most projects, even if all work won’t be completed at once.  This way, if the project is installed in stages, it will retain its design continuity and you can decide which areas of the space take highest priority.
After receiving a design retainer and your approval to proceed, we begin to document your current landscape by taking extensive site measurements and photographs.  This helps us create a base plan - our canvas, so to speak.  We also require a copy of your most current plat of survey which further reinforces the accuracy of our on-site measurements.

Design Concept Meeting

At this stage, you can expect to see your dreams beginning to unfold. We’ve taken your expectations, your hopes and desires for your garden, and interpreted them into a landscape concept that we will begin to explore with you.  Together we ‘walk’ through this garden: outlining the big idea behind the general layout and hardscape elements, examining the functions of different areas of the landscape, and evaluating how the overall concept is beginning to make you feel about your future garden.

Master Plan Meeting

After agreeing upon a concept that meshes an innovative design with your needs, the design is finalized.  Your master plan will include a complete plant palette and list of hardscape materials. Additionally, budgeting figures will be presented for review.  Acceptance of the master plan and final payment for design services conclude the design process.

Installation Estimate

Now that you have a master plan that you are excited about, Alex Head Landscapes will prepare and present an installation estimate for your approval.  We can also discuss estimated start dates, phases of the installation and timelines.
